Thomas L. Shima, M.D.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dr. Shima graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska in 1972 and finished his ObGyn residency at Creighton Memorial St. Jospehs Hospital in 1975. He was voted the "Golden Apple" Award as the top teaching resident in 1975. After serving 2 years in the USAF at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, Nevada, he arrived in Oceanside to start his tenure with Cassidy Medical Group in 1977.

Dr. Shima has been on the Active Medical Staff of Tri-City Medical Center since 1977. He served as the Chief of the Department of ObGyn in 1979-80 and 2001-2002. He was the Chairman of the Quality Assurance Committee from 1981-1983, Secretary of the Medical Executive Committee from 1985-1986 and Chief of ObGyn Quality Review Committee from 1996-2000. He has been an innovator of new techniques and procedures at Tri-City, being the first physician to perform epidural anesthesia for pain relief in labor in 1977, the first to perform vaginal births after Caesarean Section in 1977, the first to perform operative pelviscopic procedures of any kind in 1989 (after extensive training through the University of Arizona) and the first to perform Novasure endometrial ablation in 2003.

Dr. Shima was voted by the hospital staff at Tri-City Medical Center an "Academy Award" as having the "Best Bedside Manner for ObGyns" in 2003 and 2004, the first two years the honor had been awarded. He also serves as the Co-Director of ObGyn Emergency Room Services and sits on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of North Coast Surgery Center.

Dr. Shima's "passion" away from work is aggressive adventure travel. He has hiked through remote areas, and at high altitudes in Africa, Asia, South America, Europe and Antarctica and is an award winning nature and cultural photographer.
