What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that changes the way your body uses food. The food we eat turns to sugar. The sugar in turn travels to all the different parts of the body to be used for energy. Our bodies need energy to function like to allow our heart to beat and our lungs to breathe. Sugar comes from two places: Internal Sugar comes from our body's own production in the liver of from the release of stored sugar from the liver; External sugar comes from the food we eat. The sugar enters the stomach and moves tot he intestines where it is then absorbed. People without diabetes are able to regulate internal and external sugar by the pancreas producing insulin appropriately.

There are two types of Diabetes: Type I and Type II.

Type I Diabetes
Type II Diabetes

Additionally, there is Gestational Diabetes.
